The Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi has stopped issuing visas, citing “prevailing security situation”, a diplomatic source told The Hindu on Monday (December 22, 2025). The development came after India shuttered its visa application centres in Bangladesh that were targeted by mobs following the death of radical leader Sharif Osman Hadi, who was shot on December 12 by unidentified gunmen.

Over the weekend, there were sharp exchanges between the two sides after a group of men came to the main gate of the Bangladesh mission here and shouted slogans. They allegedly hurled threats at the diplomats who were present on the mission premises.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and Congress leaders held protests outside the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata on Monday against the attack on Hindus in the neighbouring country. The protests came in response to the Hindu community member Dipu Chandra Das’s lynching in Bangladesh amid the growing unrest in their nation after the death of popular youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi.

Bangladeshi journalists say right to life at stake as mobs target media

Bangladesh’s media is facing a difficult time and the freedom of expression has been overtaken by concerns over journalists’ “right to stay alive”, editors of several leading Bangladeshi newspapers have said.

The remarks came on Monday in the wake of mobs vandalising and setting ablaze the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star newspapers in Dhaka on Thursday night, trapping several journalists and staff inside for hours as police and fire services were initially prevented from reaching the spot.

“Freedom of expression is no longer the main issue. Now it is about the right to stay alive,” Daily Star editor and publisher Mahfuz Anam said at a press conference attended by senior politicians, business leaders and media owners.

Guterres voices concern over violence in Bangladesh, including lynching of Hindu man

U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres has voiced concern over the violence in Bangladesh, including the lynching of a Hindu man in the country.

“Yes, we’re very concerned about the violence that we’ve seen in Bangladesh,” Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, said at the daily press briefing on Monday.

He was responding to a question on the Secretary-General’s response to the attacks on minorities in Bangladesh and especially the lynchings of Hindus in the last few days.

“Whether it’s in Bangladesh or any other country, people who don’t belong to the ‘majority’ need to feel safe, and all Bangladeshis need to feel safe. And we’re confident that the Government will do what it can to keep every single Bangladeshi safe,” Mr. Dujarric said.

AIMSA writes to PM Modi seeking intervention to ensure safety of medical students

The All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking his “immediate and urgent intervention” to ensure the safety and well-being of Indian medical students currently stranded in Bangladesh amid the escalating anti-India sentiments in the neighbouring country.

In the letter, the Indian Medical Student Body highlighted that the students and their families have been facing distressing and unsafe conditions, resulting in significant fear, anxiety, and emotional distress, emphasising that Indian students studying abroad rely on the Government of India for protection and support during crises.

“On behalf of the All India Medical Students’ Association (AIMSA), we respectfully seek your immediate and urgent intervention concerning the safety and well-being of Indian medical students currently stranded in Bangladesh. AIMSA has been receiving serious and distressing communications from students and their families regarding the unsafe and uncertain conditions under which these students are presently living,” the letter read.

“Their security remains vulnerable, leading to immense fear, anxiety, and emotional distress among the students as well as their families in India. Indian medical students pursue education overseas with deep trust in the Government of India and the assurance that the nation will stand firmly by them in times of crisis,” it added.

Yunus reiterates commitment to hold Bangladesh general elections on February 12

Bangladesh Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on Monday reiterated his commitment to hold general elections on February 12.

Mr. Yunus made the remarks during a telephone conversation with Sergio Gor, the US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, at around 7:30 pm (local time)

“The nation is eagerly waiting to exercise their voting rights which were stolen by the autocratic regime,” Mr. Yunus said.

“The discussion, which lasted about half an hour, focused on trade and tariff negotiations between Bangladesh and the United States, the upcoming general election, the country’s democratic transition, and the murder of young Bangladeshi political activist Sharif Osman Hadi,” Mr. Yunus said in a post on X.

Inqilab Moncho threatens agitation against interim govt over Hadi's murder

Inqilab Moncho, one of the prominent platforms that rose during the ‘July Uprising’ in Bangladesh, on Monday warned of launching a mass movement to oust the current interim government of the country if justice is not delivered in the killing of its convenor, Osman Hadi, Daily Star reported.

The warning was issued by Abdullah Al Jaber, the organisation’s member secretary, during an emergency press conference at Shaheed Hadi Chattar earlier today.

According to the Daily Star, the Inqilab Moncho had issued a 24-hour ultimatum following Hadi’s final funeral prayers on Saturday but alleged that the deadline had elapsed without any concrete steps taken by Bangladesh’s Home Adviser or the relevant authorities to arrest those responsible for the killing.

He further claimed that the absence of the home adviser or his special assistant from the ministry’s briefing reflected a lack of seriousness over the incident.
