More than 11 people were feared dead when a container truck hit a luxury sleeper bus on National Highway 48, near Hiriyur in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district early morning on Thursday (December 25, 2025).
The bus with 32 passengers which was on its way to Gokarna was engulfed in flames under the impact of the collision and most of the deceased were burnt alive inside the vehicle, East Zone Inspector General of Police Ravikanthe Gowda said.
The bus driver and cleaner escaped. The driver of the truck and its cleaner are among the dead.
Reports say the truck driver’s negligence was the cause of the accident, which occurred on the highway that connects Bengaluru with Pune and Mumbai. The truck driver jumped a road-divider, lost control of the vehicle and collided with the oncoming bus.

School bus carrying children also collided with bus, no injuries reported
IGP Dr. BR Ravikante Gowda said that a school bus travelling from T Dasarahalli to Dandeli, travelling parallelly, also collided with the burnt bus.
“Fortunately, nothing happened to the 48 students who were on that bus. That school bus driver is the eyewitness to the whole incident. We are also recording his statement... Further enquiry is on...,” Dr. Gowda said.

CM announces ₹5 lakh compensation for kin of deceased
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced compensation following the tragic accident in Chitradurga that claimed several lives.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister said ₹5 lakh would be provided to the families of each deceased, while those injured would receive ₹50,000 each.
He stated that he had sought details from officials and directed them to extend all possible assistance to the victims. An investigation has been ordered to determine the cause of the accident, he added.

Three fire tenders put out fire within half hour
Three fire tenders were rushed to the spot to put off the fire soon after receiving a call about fire at the accident spot. Besides that, a State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team also reached the spot for rescue operations.
A fire tender with 4,500 litre capacity from Sira reached the spot. Later, another was called from Hiriyur fire station. Finally, one more from Chitradurga also joined the efforts to extinguish the fire.
Nagesh, the regional fire officer, told The Hindu that Sira fire station in Tumakuru district received the first call at 2.15 a.m. The three fire tenders put off the fire within half an hour. However, rescue operations and recovering the bodies continued up to 8 a.m., he said.

The heartbreaking incident in which several people died after a private sleeper bus travelling from Bengaluru to Gokarna caught fire in Javangondanahalli near Hiriyur in Chitradurga is truly shocking. May the souls of the deceased rest in peace and may their families find the courage to bear this pain. My condolences to the departed souls,’’ he said.
Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar has also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.

Deeply shocked by the tragic accident: Union Minister Kumaraswamy

Tried to control on seeing the truck approaching, but failed: Karnataka accident bus driver
The driver of the bus that met with an accident said that he tried to control his vehicle on seeing the overspeeding truck approaching from the opposite direction, but couldn’t.
“The truck came from the other side of the road divider and hit. It was overspeeding. I was maintaining the speed of 60-70 (km/hr) at that time. I saw the vehicle coming from the front. I know only the vehicle (truck) hitting the bus, after that I don’t know what happened and how I was brought out,” Rafiq, the bus driver who is undergoing treatment, told reporters.
He said, “I tried to control the bus, on seeing the vehicle approaching from the opposite direction. My bus even touched the other vehicle, which was moving next to us; I don’t know what vehicle it was. But, couldn’t (control).” Mohammed Sadiq, the cleaner of the bus who is also undergoing treatment with minor injuries, said he was thrown out of the bus due to the impact.

Truck hit divider, crossed to the other lane and hit the sleeper bus: Police
Five bodies have been found, out of which identities of three people are yet to be traced, IGP of Eastern Range B.R Ravikanthe Gowda told The Hindu on the tragic accident in Karnataka’s Chitradurga on Thursday.
“Among the dead is the driver of the container truck. Besides that, the police found four charred bodies in the bus. However, their identities are yet to be ascertained. Excluding the three people, who are yet to be traced, all are safe and some of them suffered minor injuries, Mr. Gowda said.
The accident occurred as the truck, heading towards Bengaluru, hit the divider and crossed on to other lane. The truck hit the bus, impacting the diesel tank, which caused fire, according to the police officer.

PM Modi announces ₹2 lakh ex-gratia for deceased's kin
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased in the bus-truck collision which killed at least 11 in Karnataka’s Chitradurga. The injured would be given ₹50,000, the PM said.
Mr. Modi, in a post on X, said he was saddened by the loss of lives due to the accident and wished speedy recovery to the injured.
