U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres voiced concern over the violence in Bangladesh, including the lynching of a Hindu man in the country. “Yes, we’re very concerned about the violence that we’ve seen in Bangladesh,” Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the Secretary-General, said at the daily press briefing on December 23, 2025.
The Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi has stopped issuing visas, citing “prevailing security situation”, a diplomatic source told The Hindu on Monday (December 22, 2025). The development came after India shuttered its visa application centres in Bangladesh that were targeted by mobs following the death of radical leader Sharif Osman Hadi, who was shot on December 12 by unidentified gunmen.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and Congress leaders held protests outside the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata on Monday against the attack on Hindus in the neighbouring country. The protests came in response to the Hindu community member Dipu Chandra Das’s lynching in Bangladesh amid the growing unrest in their nation after the death of Sharif Osman Hadi.

Anti-Bangladesh protests held in Jammu, Rajouri
The Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association protested the lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to either bring Hindus to India or ensure their protection there.
The lawyers also demanded that illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants be evicted from Jammu.
“We condemn the repeated attacks and killings of Hindus in Bangladesh. We want the protection of Hindus. We want to send a message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji and Home Minister Amit Shah ji that the entire country stands with them to take stern steps to ensure that atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh are stopped,” the bar’s president, Nirmal K Kotwal, said.
“There are two solutions — either bring Hindus to India or ensure their protection there. Our country is capable of doing it,” he said.

Bangladesh summons Indian Envoy over security concerns for missions
Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, was summoned to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs amid concerns over the security of Bangladeshi missions in India.
Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam summoned the Indian High Commissioner, Prothomalo.com reported.
Diplomatic sources confirmed the matter. According to the sources, Mr. Verma was summoned in light of the emerging security situation surrounding Bangladesh missions located in various parts of India, including New Delhi and Kolkata, the report added.

Hundreds of activists from VHP and Bajrang Dal descended on the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi on Tuesday (December 23, 2025) in protest against communalism in the neighbouring country, sending the high security area into chaos as they rushed to the barricades.
Earlier in the day, security was beefed up outside the embassy ahead of the protest by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal over the lynching of a Hindu man in the neighbouring country.

Reports of harassment of Hindu women in Bangladesh 'deeply disturbing': Mehbooba
PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday expressed concern over the alleged harassment of Hindu women in Bangladesh, saying the reports are “deeply disturbing”.
“Reports from Bangladesh alleging that Hindu women fear moving freely while wearing sindoor are deeply disturbing,” the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir said in a post on X.
Ms. Mufti said the leadership of the country is, however, in a moral dilemma as “lumpen elements” in India are “forcibly pulling off the hijab of Muslim women”.

Kothapet Protests: Vishva Hindu Parishad demands firm Indian response to minority attacks in Bangladesh
In Hyderabad, several Hindu organisations led by the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) protested in Kothapet on Tuesday to condemn the ongoing violence against minorities in Bangladesh. Vishva Hindu Parishad representatives said they are prepared to escalate their protests if no concrete steps are taken soon.
Shashidhar, VHP’s national spokesperson, said,” Atrocities are being done against Hindus in Bangladesh. The government of India should take strict action for the protection of Hindus in Bangladesh. Bangladesh infiltrators and Rohingyas in large numbers are living in Bhagya Nagar. If the State government doesn’t take any action, then VHP will announce an action.”

Security mounted at Bangladesh High Commission ahead of VHP protest
Security was beefed up outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi on Tuesday ahead of a protest by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal over attacks on Hindus in the neighbouring country.
The area has been secured with three layers of barricading and more force from the police and paramilitary.
“Barricades have been put in place and forces deployed to prevent any untoward incident,” a police officer said.

Bangladesh summons Indian High Commissioner over its Mission's security in India
Bangladesh on Tuesday expressed concern over attacks on its diplomatic missions in India, summoning the Indian High Commissioner to protest incidents in New Delhi and Siliguri, according to a Bangladesh Foreign Ministry statement.
“Bangladesh condemns such acts of premeditated violence or intimidation against diplomatic establishments, which not only endanger the safety of diplomatic personnel but also undermine the principles of mutual respect and values of peace and tolerance,” it added.
The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry condemned the violence, citing threats to diplomatic personnel and establishments, and urged India to ensure their safety and security.
“The Government of Bangladesh called upon the Government of India to conduct a thorough investigation into the incidents, to take all necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such acts and to ensure safety and security of Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions and related facilities in India”, the statement said.
The incidents include vandalism at the Bangladesh Visa Centre in Siliguri on 22 December 2025 and a protest outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi on 20 December 2025.

Sharif Osman Hadi's murder case to be tried under Speedy Trial Tribunal
Bangladesh’s Law Adviser Asif Nazrul said the murder case of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho, will be taken up by the Speedy Trial Tribunal to ensure timely justice, according to the Daily Star.
Separately, Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said authorities have made progress in the investigation and are working to arrest the main accused, Faisal Karim Masud. He said the government is treating the case as a top priority and stressed that all those involved in the killing will be brought to justice.

US lawmakers have condemned the targeted mob killing of a Hindu man in Bangladesh, calling on authorities to protect religious minorities and restore the rule of law.
Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi condemned the targeted mob killing of Dipu Chandra Das, amid rising instability and unrest. The Illinois Democrat called on Bangladeshi authorities to ensure accountability, protect religious minorities, and restore the rule of law.
New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar said she is “deeply disturbed” by the ongoing violence against Bangladesh’s Hindu minority, exemplified most recently by the brutal lynching of Das. Ms. Rajkumar said the incident is part of a “troubling” pattern of religious persecution and targeted violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh.
